About Me
Hi! I’m Afton, the owner and teacher at Rhythm Roots Music Studio.
I’ve been teaching music since 2006. But I’ve been teaching in some capacity since way before that. Before moving to South Carolina in 2023, I spent 13 years as a middle school choir teacher in Maryland and have taught private lessons for many years. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a master’s degree in Kodály Music Education, which is rooted in play, folk music, and building musical understanding step by step.
My philosophy is simple. Music should feel natural, accessible, and joyful. Children learn best through playful exploration, movement, connection, and repetition. Caregivers learn best when they feel welcome, supported, and part of a community. I believe in meeting each student right where they are, honoring their individuality, and creating experiences that help them develop confidence from the inside out. I want music to feel like a place where students can grow.
I also care deeply about community. Rhythm Roots is meant to feel warm, relaxed, and real. Families come as they are, and we make music together without pressure or perfection. Every class, lesson, and gathering is built around connection, curiosity, and creativity.
When I’m not teaching, you can usually find me reading, crocheting, spending time with my girls, or dreaming about the garden I hope to start here in South Carolina.
